The Time Machine by H. G. Wells
A man gathers his friends at his house in Richmond and tells them something none of them can believe. He has been somewhere, he says, and he has come back with dust on his clothes and a look in his eyes that nobody can place. What he describes is a world grown strange and quiet, where something waits in the dark, and where the people he meets seem to have forgotten what they ought to fear. Whether he is telling the truth, the story leaves you to judge.
