The Taipan by Somerset Maugham

The Taipan by Somerset Maugham is Set in China during British colonial rule. A Taipan was the name given to a Western trader who was particularly ruthless. Maugham paints a picture of arrogant and insufferable colonials lording it over the native Chinese. Though they try to ignore China and live like they are in London, the Taipan is a moral tale about how that just doesn't work.
