In a quiet Sussex house, something has gone badly wrong. A husband writes to Baker Street with a story of blood, fear, and a wife he now believes has turned upon her own child. Holmes listens, as he always does, for what is not said: the pauses, the evasions, the details that do not quite fit.

There is no thunderstorm, no melodrama. Only a few troubling facts: a locked room, a frightened servant, a whisper of ancient superstition in a modern English home. As Holmes and Watson walk the corridors, the air seems thick with a crime that may not be what it appears to be at all. The horror here is quiet, domestic, and perilously close to the everyday.

First published in The Strand Magazine in 1924, The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire was later collected in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. It stands as one of Conan Doyle’s late-period stories, folded in among his stranger and more uneasy tales.

Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish writer, physician, and creator of Sherlock Holmes. His work helped define modern detective fiction, while his later life moved uneasily between rational investigation and an enduring fascination with the supernatural.
